Now this is really a piece of art that speaks to me, its dark, grungy and very abstract. The whole landscape is created out of a twisting surreal tree and it works really well. It also creates a greate sense of action and depth as if it cought mid break as it splits.
Made modeling in Maya and ZBrush. Textures and background in Photoshop.

Use post prod in PS to composite and texture
Simple lighting of model

Use zbrush to add extra detail
You CAN recreate this in Houdini but i have not had much experiance with it.
